Description:

Select a mystery novel. Turn to page 15. Write down the 15th word on the page. Now write down every 15th word until you have 15 words to turn into a random poem. Keep the words in the order you found them, or switch them around to a more pleasing form--your choice. It would be nice to do some kind of artwork along with the poetry - whether it is collage or drawing or whatever you come up with.

You will be sending 1 postcard to 5 different people. They can be good quality copies or originals. This swap is open to international swappers.

Send your postcards "as is" - not in envelopes.

I will be checking ratings, so you need a rating of 4.7 or higher. Newbies are welcome!

Hi, please excuse my dumbness...but whne you say 'mystery' noel do you mean one as in mystery-who done it etc, or simply one that the swop partner does not know the title of? cool idea though! kind regards, Alex :-)Also is this open to international swoppers?

paperholic 11/ 1/2006 #

Do we actually use the words from the book? ie cut them out? or is that just the way we find the words to use and then handwrite, print, stamp, etc them on the postcard? It's a great idea. Isis

paperholic 11/ 1/2006 #

Forgot to ask - does the postcard go "as is" or in an envelope, or either?

redleppard 11/ 1/2006 #

Use a "who done it" mystery book. Maybe we can use a romance novel for another swap :) Oh, the possiblities!

You can use the actual words or just copy the words down, yes, it's just a way to find the words to use. Yup, you got the idea!

Send the postcard as is - I love giving the postal people a smile. I should edit the info on the swap - thanks for the questions!

lgj302 11/23/2006 #

I have my post cards ready to go...just waiting for the names! This was such fun. I couldn't believe how cool it came out just using the order that the words fell in!

sweetxjosephine 11/24/2006 #

i made my postcards with books that i've read that are formulated like "who-done-it" mysteries, but aren't classified as that in bookstores, etc. is that ok?

redleppard 11/27/2006 #

yup, sounds fine to me :)

ElizabethObviously 11/30/2006 #

so it is sort of like a postcard sized ATC???

redleppard 11/30/2006 #

I guess you could call it that :)

Susi 11/30/2006 #

I tried some kid mysteries today at work, but believe me, i did not get anything useful at all for even a random poem! gonna have to go to borders or the library and check there! susi

ElizabethObviously 12/ 1/2006 #

my poem actually makes sense...weird...

here it is: to miss his attitude was certainly an effort to her When? If? A blank Stare

it started out with alot of to, an, the..i was thinking..okay this is going to be hard...

twobluecrows 12/ 3/2006 #

So is it supposed to be just the same one poem to the five people? Or can we do five different ones--one for each? Cyn

ElizabethObviously 12/ 4/2006 #

i think you can do either

Rebekah 12/ 4/2006 #

Here's another dumb question- do we make a postcard with the "poem" on it or do we take a postcard that's already made and PUT the poem on it. I thought at first we made a postcard, now I'm not sure-

Anyone?

I have my poem ready, just need to get it in postcard form.

ElizabethObviously 12/ 6/2006 #

i recieved one today from lucyellen! i liked it!!! it made sense to me!

redleppard 12/ 6/2006 #

I made a postcard and put the poem on it....that way I could match the artwork to the poem. Plus, it's more fun :)

redleppard 12/ 6/2006 #

Yes, it is really strange but for some reason the poem will usually make some kind of sense.

redleppard 12/ 7/2006 #

Received your postcard, Lucinda! Thanks!

ElizabethObviously 12/ 8/2006 #

Mrs.Q: Received yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed your card and poem - my husband, who is a media person, was also impressed with the print quality - great work! Enjoy the snow - before we know it, it will be gone and dang summer will be here again...;o) Tassy

ElizabethObviously 12/10/2006 #

Vicki McG I recived you card!!!! Liked it

ChristineMM 12/10/2006 #

I had fun with this swap. I decided to rearrange the words into my own poem. The funny thing is my poem is a little risque and you'd have no clue it was from an Agatha Cristie mystery novel!

At one point I decided to make one postcard and use high quality color copies but this weekend after getting some great original art I ended up changing my mind. So five original collaged postcards go out in tomorrows mail.

Can someone explain to me as I am new here, do I upload my own artwork images or is the recipient supposed to do it and also is that a common/popular thing to do here on swap-bot? Thanks.

dreamstealer 12/12/2006 #

Hi Vicki McG: Glad you enjoyed it - they were fun to do!

lgj302 12/18/2006 #

Received 2 more today - Jack's mom and Julie plainsong. Thanks to you both. This has really been fun!

ChristineMM 12/19/2006 #

Tried to upload my postcards, but the first came out gigantic. I did something wrong! It is 50 dpi, so I thought that was a small size... yikes. Oh well, I tried.

Susi 12/19/2006 #

I sent my postcards out already, but am just realizing that I might not have put my name on it! So if you recieve one about 7 teachers... it's from me, susi. I got my words, rearranged them until they made some sort of sense, then typed them up and cut them into strips and glued the to tha back of a doubled cardstock postcard. I then illustrated each one with images that equaled some in the poems. I hope whoever gets them likes'em. I have recived two as of now, one that was stamped on glossy paper, and the other wit a comic strip looking old lady on the front. They bother were great! susi

user2955 12/19/2006 #

Susi I got yours and it did have your name. Very cool. I was envious of your poem because the first ten books I tried sounded like "The he she was was was..." and I was sure I would never get nouns or verbs. I also received Jo's from Australia. Anyone get mine? I used heavy cardstock so I was worried the postage was not enough. Aly

twobluecrows 12/20/2006 #

I got three great Random Poem cards! Laura Jones, Jack's Mom and Elizabeth Sims! Thanks!

ElizabethObviously 12/20/2006 #

anyone recieved from me yet???

TerryF 12/22/2006 #

AN interesting poem and card Dreamstealer! Thx!

ElizabethObviously 12/24/2006 #

hmm...i went to leave feedback and had only 4 people to leave feedback for. i thought we sent out 5...

Susi 12/24/2006 #

I have gotten three so far, unfortunately the one from Cathy did not safely arrive from the PO, it was torn and pretty mutilated, but the PO said "sorry".... meanies, they ruined a very nicely made postcard poem! I have gotten 2 others, one was the agatha Christie one, a olderlady (spideys mom) and I can't remember what else...it was cool though. The other one was stamped with blue swirls on glossy paper, and was also very cool. I need to look at the names so I can rate those two, or if they sound like yours, let me know, you both get 5's from me! The cards are just misplaced because my "studio corner" has been piled high with boxes so we can get our Christmas tree up! Ahhh, so much to do, so little time! LOL susi

user2955 12/25/2006 #

I only received three postcards and so I left ratings for all five, three fives and two ones, knowing I could change them later. Jenny emailed me sounding upset about the low rating. I tried to email her back but my email was rejected because my address was unknown. I changed the rating from one back to I will rate later. I guess the Xmas post is slow. A low rating is not meant as a personal affront. It is a statement of fact. I never got the postcard. There is no reason to be mean about it.

Elizabeth4510: I see that you have given me a 1 for this swap. If you check my profile, you will note that I am mailing from Canada, and it can take 3 weeks or more for postcards to get to the US from here. I know this because I have a place in Florida and it takes forever to move mail between the 2 countries at the best of times. At Christmas, it will definitely take even longer than that. Our postal system is terrible and also very expensive, otherwise I would send everything registered. I think that giving me a 1 when the deadline for mailing was only Dec. 15 is being a little impatient. I'm sorry you haven't received your card yet from me but perhaps if you give it until mid-January it will come. I have never renegged on the 14 swaps (29 partners) I have been in (although I have been stiffed a number of times) but am starting to get 1 ratings --- after having perfect 5s --- because people seem to think that overseas mail should be just as fast as US domestic mail, even at Christmas, and it just doesn't. It is because of impatient people that I am going to have to stop swapping because at this rate, swap coordinators are going to start banning me for all the 1s I have that I do not deserve. Just so you know, I have only received 2 of the 5 random poetry postcards myself, but I am not going to give the other three 1 ratings only 10 days after the mailing deadline. Had you contacted me personally about this before giving me a 1 (my personal email address is in my profile), I would have been happy to explain all of this to you privately. As it is, now everyone can see.

redleppard 12/27/2006 #

Erin, received your postcard today.....fabulous!!!

TerryF 12/29/2006 #

Erin and ChristineMM: Received your PCs today - they are great! Thx!

TerryF 12/31/2006 #

Elizabeth4510: Thank you for removing my 1 rating for this swap - it means a lot to me! Please do contact me if you have nothing by Janury 15th and I will gladly make and send you another one (registered mail). Tassy

user2955 01/ 3/2007 #

Jenny Still no postcard.

ChristineMM 01/ 3/2007 #

Just received a postcard from Penny postmarked 12/28/06 by the USPS (mailed from TX to CT inside of USA). Thank you for the postcard, I really am enjoying it. just changed my rating for you from a 1 to a 3 as it was received but due to lateness, technically it didn't meet swap requirements (to have postmarked by 12/15/06). That is my understanding of how the rating system works, someone correct me if I am wrong. Thank you.

user1483 01/ 5/2007 #

Hello, I received a postcard today, I think from Canada, without a name. A nice picture of two gentlemen and a little girl. Please let me know who you are. Carolyn It has a Canada stamp on it and got a little beat up from the post office but the picture is unscathed.

user2955 01/ 5/2007 #

Christine dpi is dots per inch and refers to the resolution of the picture not the size. Try reducing the image size. For example, (300 x 400) to (120 x 160). I think it would be cool if more people used the galleries so we could see what other people got or sent. Let me know if that helps.

ElizabethObviously 02/ 5/2007 #

I wonder if my other 3 partners recieved postcards from me. I have only recieved 2 feedbacks so far from this swap!
