I love the post and started getting into art mail and letter writing about a year ago. I enjoy making things and crafting little packages too. Joining swap-bot is another step on my little happy mail journey.
Professionally, I'm a scientist; I study viruses and vaccines. Yes, it's been a particularly interesting/exhausting few years so I'm grateful for the distraction of the happy mail. I know there are strong opinions about vaccines right now; I respect everyone's opinion, don't push an agenda and don't want any drama!
Personally, I'm a mother of three: two boys (ages 10 and 8) and one sweet little girl with special needs (age 7). I also have one husband and two standard poodles.
Things I love: Mostly everything I love centers around the creation of something fabulous (maybe just my opinion) or functional from very basic components. I love transforming these 'ingredients' by applying imagination, love, time and skill. For example, creating a sock from a single, unbroken strand of yarn; I know we do it all of the time, but the transformation is really amazing. So the top raw materials that I love:
-yarn. I love to knit. I spent one year knitting sweaters for my daughter from patterns. I spent the next year learning to design her sweater patterns, and then knitting the sweaters. And then the next year she decided that she didn't like wearing sweaters, too itchy i guess.
-thread. I enjoy sewing. I used to sew clothing on my machines and more recently switched to hand sewing. I love Alabama Chanin and spent a few months hand-sewing a Chanin-style dress for my daughter last year. The dress had stains within a week, but it's all about the process, right . . .
-grain. I grew up on a farm and spend the summers combining wheat throughout the US. I now grind my own flour on a stone-burr grain mill and try to incorporate it into my baking, etc. Getting the texture right is actually surprisingly difficult; I'm still working on it.
My other love interests: -letter writing and meeting new pen pals -stationary and cards -printing and letter pressing -fountain pens and good inks -journaling -writing -jewelry making, beads and nice charms -meditation -painting -calligraphy, or at least I'm trying to learn -gardening, seeds -and the obvious, unstated, spending time with my family
I like most music types; I mostly listen to country because that’s what my kids like. I love acoustic guitar and instrumental.
I joined McSweeney’s new release book club and quartet concerns a few years ago and love everything they send out. I read a lot of YA with my kids, the Harry Potter series was a huge hit.
This could take awhile, I like to try everything and enjoy honing certain aspects of a craft. Of interest: knitting and sewing clothing, hand sewing, book binding, paper crafts, gardening, brewing, jewelry making, baking. . .
