One trip in 2024, so far

Updated 25 February 2024

To open my washi-covered envelopes, tamp the contents to one end of the envelope and, at the other end, snip off a bit of a corner, a little triangle. Insert a letter opener or scissors into the gap; and pull across the edge of the envelope, in the same direction as the washi tape. Here's an album of my washi-covered envelopes and some I received. Scroll slowly so your computer has time to resolve the details in each photo.

In January I went to Amsterdam for two weeks. I walked all around the city and took trams and trains, only once getting on the wrong tram. I had a refresher course in European history (it's been a while since 10th grade). I learned why Jews had freedom in Amsterdam in the 17th century, and why Brugge, where I spent a couple of days, is so Catholic. Anne Frank House and the Jewish museum added to what I know about Dutch Jews under Hitler. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum are all wonderful. I need to go back to see the sights I didn't have time to see. I had fresh stroopwafels and will forego cold ones from Trader Joe's. I found the Art Unlimited store and between that and museums, I have 13cm of postcards.

My kitchen is my craft room because I love cooking and baking. We are vegetarians, doing our bit for climate change. I make challah every Friday for Shabbat.

Postcards

I'm swapping naked postcards on Postcrossing and blank postcards on Swap-bot. It makes it easy to organize my incoming mail.

I send the blank postcards I receive to family and friends and people on Postcrossing. Please send colorful and cheerful postcards that you'd happily send your family and friends. I appreciate quality over quantity.

No, thank you. Sorry, no hearts.
Bent corners, a sure sign a postcard has been through more than a few swaps. Postcards to color, postcards for Christian holidays and legends. Print on demand postcards like Zazzle postcards. Those cheap sepia 32-pcs Vintage Travel Sights Landscape Retro Postcards. Not childish like Distributed by Michael's Inc. designs. Please, no junk.

manders loves kawaii

My favorite kawaii has a face. I love food with faces and anchovies with legs and animals in an unlikely milieu like cat servers at faux Starbucks. I enjoy most characters, especially San-X.

About Japanese kawaii brands: See Pattie's exhaustive list on the KSU group page. Counterfeit sticker flakes are turning up everywhere, from Ali Express and some sellers on Etsy. If it's a Sanrio character and doesn't have a copyright date, it's fake. If it's San-X and largish with thick lines, it's not the real thing. If the price is great, it's probably counterfeit.

No, thanks. Poo and bottoms aren't kawaii to me. 3D stickers from sheets and sticker flakes, especially PVC and puffy. Real photos made cute aren't so cute to me. Unicorns are too sweet for me.

No, thank you

  • Chocolate. This is a new allergy and I'm struggling to give it up.
  • Christian holidays, etc. I'm Jewish.
  • Ephemera, scrapbook paper, die cuts, and the like. I won't use them.
  • Extras. I have plenty of kawaii, stickers, and washi tape. The extras I send are more of what the swap is for, e.g., an extra postcard or kawaii sticker flakes. Sometimes I write long chatty notes.
  • Food. We keep kosher and we are vegetarians. Most flavored teas aren't kosher.
  • Glitter, sequins and other tiny metallic or plastic bits
  • Pigs
  • Planner items. My iPhone is my calendar.
  • Plastic, if possible. Reuse those bubble mailers!
  • Tobacco smoke residue aka thirdhand smoke. See also thirdhandsmoke.org.
  • Unicorns, except the Unicorn Tapestries dating from the late Middle Ages.

Comment: Thanks! Glad to hear your plants are waking up for spring. I'd hoped my catnip would do the same, but I think it's just totally dead. Oh well, I need to clean out the Aerogarden and start some seeds anyway!
Response: We have squill, crocuses, and hellebore blooming now!!!

Comment: Thank you so much for the wonderful selection of postcards you sent for this swap! I love them all. I adore the Jane Austen one. I am a total sentence diagramming nerd, and I adore Jane Austen. It is now among my very favorites of my collection! Thank you again. :)
Response: You're welcome! I'm sure quite a few people haven't heard of sentence diagramming. I'm so glad you like that!

Comment: manders, you have THE most fun collection of washi tape. I think I turned your envelope over a dozen times, just admiring it all. LOVE what you sent (obvs) and feel for you with the in-law issues. It'll be us one day. Hugs
Response: You're welcome. Some of the washi tapes are from Paper Treats. I need to remind myself to hold off on buying more until I'm swaping again.

Comment: Thank you for all the great goodies. The water PC is so neat, the note card is funny (cat), and the stickers sheets are wonderful. The silhouette ones are so unusual (in the best possible way)!
Response: You're welcome. Thank you for the lovely comment.

Comment: Hi Meredith! Thank you so much for the note and awesome Japanese postcards. Oh, and for the red fox stamp, too (it arrived unmarked and perfect for my project). I hope the recent change with your MIL has been positive for everyone.
Response: You're welcome! My sister-in-law and I had lunch together today. Not so much a practical planning lunch as it was mutual empathy. I'm the one who says, Let's keep it simple.

Comment: Ah, Meredith, what a joy to receive mail from you. Your gorgeous washi tape envie is a gift in itself. Then you fill it with such thoughtfully chosen PCs and top it off with a delightfully newsy letter. The perfect snail mail trifecta! Thank you. thank you, thank you. Writing you a real letter is on my to-do list, but the list is long and my attention span is short.
Response: It's always a joy sending to you! I too have a too long to do list. I'm thinking about where I want to go next and am stuck here in MN for a while.

Comment: I love all the washi you used! Those pixel mountains are darling! And you washi'd both sides! Thanks for all the lovely samples too!
Response: You're welcome. I put washi on both sides figuring the odds are better for it to stay one. One day I'll send myself an envelope to test my theory!

Comment: Oh my gosh, this is amazing, thank you so much! I especially love Little Science and the peas in their pods ones β€” do you know their name? And where do you get them? Alwayzkawaii had some Little Science but is sold out. I do most of my kawaii shopping there and don’t really know what else is out there.
Response: You're so welcome. I've had those mini memo pads forever. I probably bought them from kawaiishopjapan.com thought her selection is quite different now. I've not bought much kawaii recently.
