Hello! A year or so ago I started sending my girlfriend postcards from cheesy roadside tourist attractions that I've been collecting for years, and eventually that evolved into real letters, prototypes of zines I was working on, art I've made, and so on; she sends stuff in return occasionally, but she definitely prefers communicating online or over the phone to snailmail. But I still really enjoy putting together letters and packages, and I'm so excited to find a place here to do just that! I would love to receive stickers, journal cards, ephemera, or even just cool patterned paper that I can use when making zines!
I'm currently working two jobs, taking a year or two off from getting my degree in history and education to save up to afford tuition; I had a scholarship for the first two years, but when it was time to transfer from a community college to a 4-year university I wasn't able to get another one. Putting together art and flipbooks and other handmade things has been sort of an escape from a really stressful time in my life. I'm not the most talented artist, but I make stickers, do embroidery (usually small patches), and I'm currently in the process of learning some different bookbinding techniques that I use to make zines/poetry chapbooks!
My taste in music tends to change every couple of weeks, but some of my past favorites have been: -Metallica -Indigo Girls -Mitski -Fleetwood Mac -David Bowie -and my current favorite is Orville Peck!
Currently reading: Vampires in the Lemon Grove by Karen Russel
Previous Read: my 10th re-read of the first Kiki Strike book! I first read them in elementary school and was irrationally angry that no one else had heard of them -I didn't understand why even other girls were more interested in the Percy Jackson series than a book about a group of ex-girlscouts that discover a network of secret tunnels and stop an assassination attempt. Tbh i'm still mad that no one else seems to have read this series.
Favorite Biography: Rocket Girl! It's a biography written by the son of Mary Sherman Morgan, who was America's first female rocket scientist and also the fuel engineer that created the rocket fuel that launched america's first satellite!
Favorite genre: I'll read just about anything but straight romance novels. I have very little patience for men and find most hetero romance tropes to be creepy if not outright abusive -but most of my favorite books so far have fallen under Weird Girls Go On Fantastic Adventure And Either Stop Crime, Commit Crime, Or Fight God.
I'm a big fan of b-horror movies from the 50s and 60s, any zombie flicks (except newer ones, which all seem to follow the wlking dad formula of Boring Group Tries To Survive Barren Wasteland. it's such a boring, unoriginal take on the genre), and 80s action movies. My dad used to show me his favorite movies from when he was a teenager when I was younger so I have a weirdly emotional attachment to Terminator 2 and Top Gun.
I've watched every single episode of Leverage so many times that I can recognize not only what episode a still came from, but also what was happening in the scene.
I do an annual rewatch of all the Star Trek series, but my favorite is TNG and DS9.
Elementary owns my entire life. It's by far the best adaption of the Sherlock Holmes novels I've ever seen and yes I know that's like swinging a baseball bat at the hornet's nest that is bbc sh*rlock fans but I'm still right.
Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, Killing Eve, Good Omens, and Myth Busters are some of my other favorites!
I do a lot of embroidery! I used to do some custom commission work but no one seemed to realize that it takes more than two or three days to finish a large piece and it became more trouble than it was worth -I still embroider regularly, but mostly to make patches for myself or some local bands that then sell them at shows!
I mostly do things with colored pencils or posca pens (which are great for atc's) but also mess around with water color now and then. Recently got some gouache so can't wait to mess around with that!
I'm learning bookbinding techniques, so I have dozens of little handmade notebooks and flipbooks lying around that I don't really have a use for aside from using as practice, but I would love to get some cute stickers or patterned paper/journal cards to decorate them with so I can send them in future swaps!
