Gabriel Garcia Marquez is hands-down the most influential Latin American writer of the 20th Century, and maybe ever. Please do read his One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love in the Time of Cholera, and/or Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
I also highly recommend the fiction & non-fiction of Ilan Stavans, a Jewish Mexican writer who now lives in Amherst, Mass.
I'm ashamed to say that I know poco y nada about Chicano literature and culture. Just enough to know that I'd like to read The House on Mango Street and So Far from God. What did you read in class?
Oooh and yes, I have been to Cuba, as a guest of a lovely family in Havana and as an organizer of the World Festival of Youth and Students, in 1997. It was unbelievable! More on that later.
