Description:

Here's another round of the cento swap--for those who want to do it again or who missed it the first time but would like to give it a try!

A cento is a poem composed entirely of lines taken from already published poems by different authors. The word "cento" means "stitched," and you can think of a cento as a verbal quilt made up of fabric (=lines) from different sources, sewn together. For a longer description of the cento and two lovely examples, see http://thewordshop.tripod.com/cento.html

Let's try our hand at this poetic form that is part verbal collage and part homage!

Each participant will create a cento of at least 8 lines and will send it to 2 partners. Don't use an author more than once, alter nothing in the original lines except punctuation and capitalization, and make sure you include a key to your cento in which you list the authors, poems, and publications from which your lines are taken. Also include English translations in your key if some (or all) of your cento is in a language other than English.

How you present your cento is up to you: typed and printed, hand-written, composed out of letters clipped from magazines, or whatever feels right to you!

Fine print: 1) Newbies with completed profiles are welcome. 2) People with a rating below 4.7 will be dropped. 3) This is an international swap.

Hi Beckta, thank you for putting up a 2nd of these. I had lots of fun with the last one. Although I have read poety on and off since I was at school and often carry a small antholgy if I think I will be waiting around any length of time, this has got me back into it in a big way and I am discuvering poets that are new to me:-)))

boatbird 08/18/2007 #

Yay! Thank you for doing round 2 Beckra!!!!!

beckra 08/19/2007 #

I'm so glad people are up for this again! I love that it gives me a motivation and excuse to rummage around in poetry books and anthologies....

Moominbrooke 08/19/2007 #

I enjoyed it last time- the juxtapositions can be remarkable. This time I will attempt something more on the Upbeat side, aiming for Silly and Amusing (rather than the previous Dark and Gritty).

Moominbrooke 09/ 5/2007 #

Well, it didn't come out amusing, but I like it anyway. Maybe I'll do another...

beckra 09/ 6/2007 #

Yeah, Brooke--They seem to have a way of coming out differently than anticipated; at least that's my experience! And I think it's kind of fun to be surprised by the outcome, as if the lines had minds of their own....

beckra 09/ 6/2007 #

Partners are assigned; let's start sending! Please let me know if you have any questions or run into any troubles. Have fun--and thanks, thanks, thanks for joining this swap!

WOW this is harder than i thought. . .but in a good way! i'm having a little trouble not finishing the poem myself! i think my first problem is trying to decide where it's going instead of letting it take me there. but it got me thinking more about writing again:o) thanks for introducing me to this form. and thanks to pickle for putting one in her zine and inspiring me to try it out!

simplysarah 09/16/2007 #

can i use lyrics instead of poetry??? it is a form of poetry!

beckra 09/17/2007 #

Sure, simply sarah--I think lyrics count as poetry....

AngelFaeryKathleen 09/23/2007 #

Hi I love doing these, thank you Beckra for running a second one:-)))))

Simply Sarah and gck keep and eye out in 7 to 10 days as yours are winging their way to you from N.Z. enjoy :-)

kiki 09/26/2007 #

beckra 10/ 6/2007 #

Thanks, kiki! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

simplysarah 10/ 6/2007 #

hey all ... I have started working on the ones for the next swap! when you get the ones for this swap I would gtreatly appreciate some feedback??? just to know that I put them together alright? as far as "how they are supposed to be?"

hope you like.... enjoy! sarah

simplysarah 10/ 6/2007 #

you are gonna do this again right????

gck 10/ 8/2007 #

Definitely harder than it sounded! I forgot yesterday was Columbus Day... so anyone receiving from the US should be aware that anything put in the mail on the 8th will actually be sent on the 9th. Please don't hold that against me... I don't get the day off. =/

boatbird 10/ 9/2007 #

Sorry if mine is late- I had an accident on Saturday and am suffering from whiplash :( They will be posted tonight on my way home- I forgot all about the post office yesterday as I had to go back to the police station with my medical report

beckra 10/12/2007 #

gck: I had forgotten about the Columbus Day Holiday; I wish I had realized that, and I would have set the deadline on a different day. But even if the post office didn't pick it up on 10/8, you mailed it on 10/8!

beckra 10/12/2007 #

Oh my goodness, boatbird, I hope you're okay!!

beckra 10/12/2007 #

Well, simplysarah, it looks like we'll have to have another one of these cento swaps so your new ones will have somewhere to go! I'm glad you had fun!
