Description:

PLEASE NOTE*** Rules have changed a bit... please read ALL THE WAY THROUGH this description if you are interested in swapping!!!

I love scavenger hunts, and thought it would be fun to try and find books that fit certain criteria—colors, words, symbols, images, etc. I will continue this swap with a different set of scavenger hunt items each month.

I've had a lot of fun with these the past several months, and really appreciate everyone who has participated!!! :)

For this swap, you will send your partner a book, from your own collection or from a used bookstore, thrift shop, etc. that contains all three items from the following list.

  1. Either the title or the author’s name must contain a double letter (two of the same letter together, examples: ‘The Secret Life of Bees’, ‘All the Pretty Horses’, or author names: Flannery O’Connor, Mark Haddon.)

  2. Books must have a quote at the beginning (Stephen King does this a lot). NOT quotes from reviews about that book, but a quote that the author chose as a sort of “hint” of what their book is about. This might be song lyrics, lines from a poem, a bit of wisdom from some long-dead famous person, a Bible verse, or whatever the author decided to use.

  3. In honor of Mother’s Day (May 9th), your book must contain a description of a woman who is pregnant, giving birth, or going through the adoption process, OR, it must have a picture of a mother and child.

Books can be any type or genre—fiction, biography, self-help, how-to, children’s, little “gifty” books, etc. Sender’s choice, but feel free to check your partner’s profile to get ideas or avoid specific dislikes.

To recap: you will have ONE partner and send them ONE book, but it needs to have all three scavenger hunt items represented in/on it (double letter, quote, mom). Feel free to send Media Mail (particularly if your book is quite heavy), but do not include anything else in the package, other than the note (and maybe a bookmark) tucked inside the book!

Books can and most likely will be used, but must be readable and clean.

PLEASE include a note describing where all three items can be found (if it’s not obvious), and anything you’d like to add about the book, your reaction to it (if you've read it), etc.

Unfortunately, I have to make this one US/Canada/Mexico only… mailing books overseas, especially heavy ones, can be super- expensive. :( But feel free to start an international version if you’d like!

The legal mumbo-jumbo: No recent ones or threes— please take care of your old swaps before signing up for new ones! NEW RULE: Must have at least ten RATED (with fives) snail mail swaps under your belt! Exception: I will "grandfather in" newbies who have participated in my swaps before without any problems. Other than that, sorry, but I'm not allowing brand-new newbies anymore, OR anyone who has flaked on this swap previously, OR anyone who has participated in this swap but did not rate their partner (and yes, I will check profiles!) Sorry to be such a hard-a$$, but I lost one of my all-time favorite swappers from this swap because of people not following these rules... this makes me really unhappy, and from now on I will be very careful about whom I allow to join this swap!

Please don’t sign up unless you’re committed to sending!!! It might be a good idea to have a book in mind before signing up... then, after partners assigned, you can keep an eye out for something that might be more your partner's taste, if necessary. And if you're going to be late for any reason, PLEASE let both me and your partner know!!! This has been an ongoing problem with this particular swap, for some reason. I don't mind the lateness, it's the non-communication that gets to me.

Having said all that... let's scavenge! :)

I'm pumped for this swap! But I'm afraid of the challenge of finding the book!!!

Everyone who packs a lunch when they head out to hunt books raise your hand! What? Just me?

hydro75 04/14/2010 #

@katier - I haven't packed a lunch for book-shopping trips yet, but that's a really good idea! Might help combat the low blood sugar I get after spending hours in the book section of the thrift shop... :) I'm so happy you're joining us!!! :)

@Hellotheremary - Don't be afraid! It's not as difficult as it might seem. A little trick I picked up in 'nam (or somewhere): If an unfamiliar book meets the first two criteria, try running the title on Amazon.com and see if it gives you the "search inside this book" option... then you can type a keyword into the search engine (such as "pregnant" or "birth") and see if it gives you anything.

I'd still much prefer that everyone sends a book they've read and are familiar with, but I know that's not always possible...

I was afraid, but I found my book the first time I went looking! :D

Good job! See, I told you it wouldn't be that hard! :)
