I stumbled across this web page:

Link

EDIT ABOUT THE LINK: It works now! Here's another one for inspiration

http://www.thewurstgallery.com/vintage_vandals.html

I thought it'd be a neat idea for a swap! To join: Make sure you have no recent 1's or 3's....If you have less then 5 big swaps, just PM me. I don't really see the need for a rating number requirement. If it's too low, I'll contact you and we'll talk.

So here's the deal.

  1. Sign up for swap
  2. Go thrift store and by a painting.. ( either a 5 x 7 or an 8x 10...or anything else that's in those dimensions)
  3. Alter it! Paint it. Use pastels, chalk, bits of paper, spray paint. ANYTHING. (I think if you use pastels or something, maybe put a clear coat of spray paint over it?)
  4. Send it to you partner.
  5. Wait for the magic of swap-bot to happen
  6. Open Mail
  7. PROFIT

I would like to make this a two partner, but I want to see how this swap goes cause it's my first public swap! Maybe I'll do that next time.

Hi Tara. I just tried the link and it didn't work for me. I would really like to see it. Any idea where the gremlins are?

TARAism 03/10/2010 #

there needs to be an underscore...one these_...between all the words...it won't let me post it correctly

I'm not the best at painting, but this sounds too fun for me to pass up!

That painting was brilliant.

Snason 03/10/2010 #

Hmm that is odd how it wont let you put the correct _ between each word.

TARAism 03/10/2010 #

I know!!! I tried a gazillion times haha

Seasidegirl 03/10/2010 #

Really good idea for a swap. Are the measurements 5x7 and 8x10 in inches? Also, I'm not dsure if they will have any real paintings locally, would framed prints or reproductions be OK?

Trying this for the link but i don't know if it will worked altered thrift shop painting

pandagirl 03/10/2010 #

I really want to join this. It is so cool. I'm watching it in the hopes I can find an appropriate painting.

TARAism 03/10/2010 #

@Seasidegirl the measurements you wrote are correct, send one painting. Like, send either one 5x7 or one 8x10. Thanks for posting the link :)

TARAism 03/10/2010 #

@seasidegirl ....yes in inches...I replied too quickly

hydro75 03/10/2010 #

Cool idea! Watching!

Cocoa 03/10/2010 #

This sounds like fun !!! Do we send it with the frame ?

TARAism 03/10/2010 #

@cocoa it's not require. if it's already attached and you don't want to removed, that's fine too. But, like I said, it's not a requirement

Seasidegirl 03/11/2010 #

Thank you. What about using prints or reproductions rather than original real paintings?

AvengedSevenfold 03/11/2010 #

Hey Taralsm, Im a newbieeeee haha, it wont let me PM you but I would really like to be a part of this swap. If you could let me know if I can join or not asap because I want to get down to the charity shops asap! :)

TARAism 03/11/2010 #

@seasidegirl I'm a little weary of those, but I'm going to say reproductions and prints are fine only if the meet the requirements of size and being found at the thrift store. My only concern with prints are maybe compromising the original composition of the work (for example, if the print is a marker drawing, then the original picture is ruined when you add paint or glue to it). But use the usual the discretion of Swap-Bot...Don't send anything you wouldn't want to get in the mail. For the reproductions, they shouldn't be your work or the work of someone you know. The point of this is try and dabble in older, unknown styles of art to create something new and unique. It's suppose to be challenging and fun because you're creating on a surfaces that's already a work of art as opposed to working on a blank canvas.

ladydy5 03/11/2010 #

Love this idea. Now onto thrift stores to find original paintings. That might be the challenge.

katier 03/11/2010 #

Just back from my favorite local thrift shop. Finding an original painting was cake. In fact, I left with three of them because I'm indecisive like that. This promises to be a good time.

Seasidegirl 03/12/2010 #

OK, thank you. I'm off to hunt before I sign up, to make sure I can find one. Is slight variation in size OK providing it is in those general proportions?

I'm going to get several as well, if possible, to experiment. This is going to be brilliant, great swap, thanks xx

katier 03/12/2010 #

Crap! I just noticed the size requirement. Can we all agree that larger than 8x10 is acceptable? :/

TARAism 03/12/2010 #

@katier how much bigger? Just let your partner know once they are assigned, I don't think anyone will mind.

katier 03/12/2010 #

A lot bigger, significantly bigger. I'll check with my partner when they are assigned. I do have 2 backups in the event I have to downsize. The bigger one is by far the most impressive though.

craftycol 03/12/2010 #

Sounds like a good swap but think I wont worry this time. Tje postage would not be good inernationanly. Smiles Col.

craftycol 03/12/2010 #

the lol

girlwithoutaname 03/27/2010 #

Banksy is a leader in this type of art and would be a good example to look at. And not an underground artist but more of a pioneer in this idea of art is the older John Baldessari. Happy swapping !

katier 03/29/2010 #

Spoiler Alert: I posted my altered painting to both Facebook and Flickr. Don't click if you want to be surprised! :)
