Description:

The Catholic novena comes from the Latin word for "Nine" and is a 9 day prayer typically used for mourning or special petitions. "Catholic" is greek for "universal". In the New Testament at the Ascension, our Lord gives the Apostles the Great Commission and then tells them to return to Jerusalem and to await the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Acts of the Apostles recounts, “After that they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet near Jerusalem — a mere Sabbath’s journey away. Together they devoted themselves to constant prayer” (Acts 1:12, 14). Nine days later, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost. It has been held that this was a significant contributor to the “nine-day period of prayer” of the Apostles, and is the primary basis for the catholic novena.

For this swap, copy a favorite prayer or pen your own special prayer to be said for 9 days by your partner. Around the prayer created 9 separate pockets or mini-envelops, and on a piece small paper, place a special intention for your self on one side, and a special prayer or intention for the world on the other. This gives your partner something to open for each of the nine days of the novena prayer.

This takes the idea of the novena and combines it with the opening of an intention, similar to a treat like you would find in an advent calendar.

Decorate, and have fun!
