Description:

Nōtan is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery. This use of light and dark translates shape and form into flat shapes on a two-dimensional surface.

For this swap, we will be creating abstract Nōtan designs. You can watch a straight-forward tutorial on YouTube on how to create a Nōtan design: http://youtu.be/CDF_FToeT38.

Minimum size of the completed piece is 4"x6" (the minimum size of the background). Color and pattern combinations are sender's choice; I think you can see from the examples that this is an interesting technique whether it's done in b&w, black on pattern (like the swap graphic) or contrasting solid colors.

Finished pieces can be sent as naked postcards or enclosed in an envelope. Please do not forget to include the swap name somewhere. Any questions - please ask!

This technique can also be executed like this:

using two equal pieces of paper (one cut in half). Cut the shapes out of the half sheet and glue them down to the other (negative half).

That is: cut your positive shapes out of the half sheet (blue in this example), take the remaining negative space and glue it to one side of the larger sheet (orange). Then take the positive (blue) shapes and arrange them opposite.
