Number of swap partners:4
Description:

You will knit or crochet 4 7x7" squares, one each for 4 different partners.

The idea of this is that everyone will receive 4 different unique squares to start off an afghan, or at least a pillow. You can use whatever yarn weight you want to make the squares, the most important thing is the finished size as they will be sewn together by your recipient. This is an excellent way to use up oddments in your stash, but please only use nice quality yarn (ie - no Red Heart). You can experiment with texture, pattern, stripes, whatever you like, each square can be one solid colour, or a mixture of colours.

I'm happy for people to list preferences if they have allergies, or if there is a colour that they really hate, but the idea of this is that it's a complete surprise, and you end up with something really funky!

I'm hoping to turn this into a monthly or bi-monthly swap if it goes well and people are interested.

This is an international swap!

Oh, and any swappers with multiple no sends or not sending the right items will be banned. New swappers are welcome.

Please ensure that you weave in the ends of your squares, and that you weave in at least 8" to stop it unravelling over time. This is important for the person who receives your squares (think how you would feel if you has lots of loose ends hanging off your afghan!), so I have made it part of the specific swap requirements.

Following another suggestion, please can all international mailings be done by AIRMAIL. This shouldn't cost too much as each square will be fairly light. There have been instances in other swaps with small items being sent surface, which can take up to 3 months in some cases, and the sender being given a bad rating because nothing has arrived.

I would prefer soft wool squares. Any color is ok.

Cassandra 11/16/2006 #

Yes i would be interested in a monthly/bi monthly swap. The squares surely would add up after doing a few monthly/bi monthly swaps for this.

i was thinking of doing this myself. yay im excited! and if it happens monthly, that'd be great

I've been emailed some suggestions:

Firstly, I was asked if people can specify the yarn used for the squares sent to them. The answer is no. You can state preferences if you really want to, but don't rely on them too heavily. The idea is that people get to use up oddments from their stash, so you get whatever comes your way. This will lead to a complete mixture of fibres and colours, and hopefully make a really funky and varied afghan over time.

Secondly (and I think this is a very good point, so I've added it above), please weave in the ends of your square, and make sure that there is at least 8" to weave in so that they don't become unravelled over time.

It would also be good to block the squares before they are sent, so they are ready to be sewn together. Also, it might be helpful to include a little of the yarn used for the square so that your recipient can have matching thread for sewing the squares together.

I welcome any ideas or suggestions, so please feel free to either put them here or contact me!

I am very excited! I am going to have to dig through the stash and figure out what to start knitting with. HOpe you guys like cables bc i know i do.

user4178 11/22/2006 #

I don't have time to do this one, but this should definitely be an on-going thing, I'd love to participate!!

user5076 11/22/2006 #

New to Swapping but not new to knitting. This sounds like LOTS of fun! I love dark jewel tones. I also love experimenting with new patterns. Please include your pattern if its not basic. Thanks!

dashenka 11/25/2006 #

FYI, I have banned the user with multiple no-sends. With everyone else making an effort, I will only allow people with good ratings and new swappers (we all have to start somewhere!).

I have finished 2 squares to send now, how is everyone else getting on?

dashenka 11/25/2006 #

Deltajuliet83,

I very much hope this will come to be a regular swap, and hopefully more people will join for the next one once Christmas is out of the way!

user4181 11/27/2006 #

I need to drop, I am sorry. I just realized that I have way too much to do before christmas. I will catch it on the next go around. :)

dashenka 11/28/2006 #

Never mind Kaytm, it sounds like there are quite a few people who'd like to join next time, you'll all just have some catching up to do..lol!

user5122 11/28/2006 #

It's my 1st swap and i really enjoy it. I love bizarre and mixed up things, with many colors so this swap was for me. I love green, green and green so let you imagination work... :)

user2471 11/30/2006 #

I too would love to do this regularly but cannot participate at this time also due to holiday obligations - would you consider pushing out your deadline date until after the holidays?

dashenka 11/30/2006 #

Kittyoma - I'm not going to change the deadline for this swap as I'll be running it again sometime in January anyway.

I'll post the new swap pretty much as soon as this one ends, so there will be lots of time for people to sign up. If anyone has anything they'd like me to change for the next swap (is everyone happy to do 4 squares each time?), please let me know!

fairykiss 12/ 1/2006 #

Dashenka- for some reason my email is acting all funny and I can't respond to anyone with a hotmail address. I did get your email and mine is a valid email address. I hope this didn't cause any problems, I just didn't want you to think I wasnt responding. Thanks :) and looking forward to this swap!!

dashenka 12/ 1/2006 #

No problem Fairykiss, here's as good as anywhere!

Neenbug 12/ 2/2006 #

I would love anything. I love dark jewel colors also purples, greens, burgundy, etc. any yarn will do also!

user5076 12/ 5/2006 #

Please please please be sure your profile is up to date with any allergy information! I would hate to send something out that gave someone the sniffles and watery eyes. Even after washing and blocking and no cats ever laying on the yarn it can still affect people. I emailed all my swappin' receivers just to make sure.

dashenka 12/ 6/2006 #

Just to say, that I have cats and a non-shedding dog, who I try to keep away from my yarn and knitting, but can't guarantee that no hairs will have worked their way in. All my squares will be washed and blocked before sending, other than that, I'm not sure what I can do - any ideas?

user5122 12/12/2006 #

Hello, I just sent my 4 squares.. but i don't know why.. it seems i did click on the send button, because it was already wrote sent beside my name... Anyway, today I went to the post office and I mailled my 4 squares.

Neenbug 12/17/2006 #

Stephanie, Thanks so much for the square! What a beautiful pattern. I hope this swap continues because it would be neat to see a finished afghan or something. I was so surprised to receive it so soon. Merry Christmas, Jeaneen

dashenka 12/18/2006 #

Mustanggirl - yes, it will continue, the next round has just been opened! Hopefully over time we'll have a growing gallery of growing afghans!

Cassandra 12/18/2006 #

Diane Jennison Caroline Locke Stephanie Voyer Carly George your afghan squares will go out in tomorrow's mail. Sorry about the delay. Medical problems put a damper on my knitting for a bit but now I am back on track. I hope you are all happy with what I have knitted up. This is so great and I hope we will continue this so we all can end up with a good sized afghan.

dashenka 12/19/2006 #

I'm sure it will be wonderful Sissie, will look forward to it when it arrives.

Neenbug 12/21/2006 #

Sorry girls, i forgot to tell Stephanie, Manda, Cassandra and Diane that the squares I crocheted were a wool/cotton blend that is washable. I did not include yarn to sew them together with. I am new to all this and did not pay attention. If any of you need the yarn please let me know and I will send some to you. Jeaneen

user5076 01/ 4/2007 #

I've heard from one of my last two square providers letting me know that my square is on the way. If you HAVE NOT received my square yet please let me know! Two have been confirmed delivered. I'm sure the one that went overseas and to Canada should be arriving anytime. Thanks and I look forward to the next one that's already set up!

user5076 01/ 4/2007 #

OOps.. not Canada - that's another swap. It was a US delivery. Hope everyone is recovering nicely from the Holidays and is having a good new year!
