This sounds really cool, but I've never done decorated envelope swaps. How decorated can they be for the post office to deliver? Do you leave a white space for the address? Can you post examples? Sorry for the dumb questions.

I have decorated both sides completely with stamps and just left enough room for my address and my partner's address, and there was no problem sending it through the mail. You can use a white sticker or permanent markers to write over part of your design. I have even decorated the entire "front" and just put the addresses on the reverse. I have also put a clear sleeve over the whole piece, if I have a lot of bits and pieces that might fall off. You just have to make sure that there is proper postage and that the addresses are legible.
