Description:

There have been swaps up for a nicer DIY, not so junky journal, so I thought I'd provide one for those of us who enjoy the challenge of putting together a journal from recycled, unexpected items. Here are the details:

  • The covers should be 6" X 9".
  • Add at least 20-25 pages (front and back are one page).
  • The pages can be varied sizes.
  • Add at least five pockets however you'd like.
  • Bind it however you'd like.
  • Please sign your creation on the inside of the back cover.

This one should be a blank canvas for the recipient, so the only decorating should be a small amount on the cover.

Here are some suggested page ideas:

  • junk mail envelopes
  • book pages
  • graph / grid paper
  • old notebook paper
  • manila envelopes
  • paper sacks
  • any other "repurposed" paper
  • maps

Due to the bulk of this swap, I've made it U.S. only to help with the mailing costs. (I'll do an international one if there is enough interest. Please PM me if you'd like to do an international one.)

I will angel for those who don't receive a swap.

Swap requirements: You'll need to have a rating of 4.90 or better and a well filled-out profile so that your partners will have an idea of what you'd like. Newbies are welcome with a completed profile. No recent or unexplained 1s or 3s. No flakers. I will consider those with a lower rating with personal communication before sign-up.

Please PM me if you have any questions. This will be a fun way to encourage our smashing/junking addictions. Smash and Junk away!!

I have made a junk journal like this, so making another will be fun! I've been wanting to make a totally random journal for a while, now I have the "excuse" to do it!

Susi 09/30/2012 #

@littlehana86 Did you just google junk journals to find pics, or is there a certain page that is made specific to the swap?

check this out

okay to use some scrapbook paper? And ok to make the journal a little bigger?

Susi 10/17/2012 #

@cauwae I was going to ask the same questions. I have some great paper(s) that would fit right in with this type of a junk journal; and I also would like to make mine a bit bigger. I'll send joyceann a pm and ask her, I don't know if she is checking the comments.. I am really excited about this swap! I have been collecting stuff since I signed up.

@flofirenzie That's an excellent resource! It'll be fun to look through and get some more ideas. I also have found towo videos on you tube that are pretty good. One is called "MiniAlbumScraps Junk Journal Swap February 2012" by NJGardengirl1961, she is just showing the junk journal she made, but it has some good ideas about making pockets and pages. The other is called Smas and Stash Journal Ideas by designoriginals, and it's a tutorial on how to make a junk journal from a recycled paper grocery bag and junk mail envelopes. I made one and it turned out pretty cool. It's not exactly the kind of junk journal for this swap, but it does give some ideas. I'll post a picture of it on my pinterest if anyone wants to take a look at it. (just search Susi Unupi to find me!) Sorry that I didn't just add links to the videos, but I don't know how to do that, at least not like flo did it!

You can make the journal bigger if you want, but please check with your partner to make sure it's okay with them first. No scrapbook paper please, since this is a "reuse" journal.

I think this swap is going to become a total addiction if you continue it! I loved it the first time. I had a hard time giving the one I made away, and am busy junking away in the one I received! I can't resist. :)
